I have a clean install of Mandrake 10.0 and I am attempting to install the NVidia driver for my GeForceFX 5200. I ran the installer package and it installer properly. However when I edit the XF86Config-4 file to use the "nvidia" driver and reboot, it overwrites my changes and sets it back to "nv". It's probably something silly, but I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes I entered into root first. I even tried dropping into init mode 1 and editing the file from there and then rebooting. However, no avail. I know it is taking my changes, because I also wrote some options for the driver in the file and it kept those. Perhaps Mandrake or KDE has some sort of file protection that is causing it to revert when I boot back up into the GUI? I'm just pulling stuff out of my nether regions now.

what procedure are you using to edit XF86Config-4 with? are you using VI? if so, did you remember to save the changes by typing :wq (hit enter) when done editing? if not, try that. if that isn't the case, please post the procedure you're using.
Yes I am using VIM. I made the changes and used :wq the first time and second time I chose :w and then did a :q to make sure, though it shouldn't matter. Like I said, I know it saving because it saved the options I set for the video card.
do you have matching kernel & kernel sources? if so, i'm sorta stumped. KDE would not protect the XF86Config-4 file. if it isn't the kernel scenerio & you're sure you're saving the file correctly, could you please post the method you're using to install the drivers? for reference, here's the proper method............ Nvidia Install Instructions. see my post #2 in that thread.
I think I figured it out.
I disabled the Boot splash screen and removed all the options I set for the graphics card and I got it to load the correct driver. So, I'm assuming thats what did it. Thanks for your help guys, that was a rather odd problem.
