Question ppp0 not found and screen hangs on 10.1 community

Hello there,

I've had a great deal of experiance with installing various linuxes but I've come to a stand still on Mandrake 10.1 community.

Lets start with the Xwindoze issue, when Xwindows is operating (regardles of interface 'KDE, Gnome') the screen will go black, flash a couple times and stay dark. Usually when a new window or pop-down menu are appearing.

My hardware is as follows:

Compaq 1525 monitor, configured as 1024x768 @ 60 hz
82845CGC integrated graphics controller, detects as using the i845(?) xorg driver

Secondly I have the problem of 'ppp0 not found' when I try to dialup, I'm using a Diamond SupraExpress 56e Pro external serial modem on /dev/ttys0.

The modem responds, dials and tries to connect. If I start kppp in a terminal window I can see an endless number of 'ppp0 not found' errors scrolling by.

Any ideas?

Thanks a ton,

Weather

If you're using ttyS0, then you must be using a real serial port. In a console, type lspci, and check your hardware irq and memory assignments.

/etc/rc.d/rc.serial should have the same irq and memory assignment as shown for your modem using lspci. There should also be a link in /etc to /etc/rc.d/rc.serial.

cd to /etc and type ls -al rc.* and you should see:
rc.local -> rc.d/rc.local*
rc.serial -> rc.d/rc.serial*
rc.sysinit -> rc.d/rc.sysinit*

You need the link in /etc for the modem to be found at boot time. Here's my rc.serial script:

#! /bin/sh
# rc.serial
rm -f /dev/modem
setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A irq 19 port 0xd800
ln -s /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem
echo "Modem Ready"

All the above information was found using lspci.

Does /sys/class/net/ppp0 exist?

Michael
