Bringing up interface ppp0...hangs up

I recently installed RedHat 9.0 and activated the interface fot ppp0 on a Conexant modem.....the system boots up and hangs "Bringing up interface pp0:"...........It also fails in "Determining IP information for eth0.."......

How can I modify at boot time to disable these two functions so I can modify them in the boot options ?????
