post-install question... I think I messed up...

Hello, I've justed installed Mandrake 10.1 using the 1 CD install I downloaded off the internet (it downloads packages off the internet that it needs during install).

So I get my second hard-drive partitioned (I used the automatic one where it created a "/" drive, a /swap drive, and a /home drive), and installed Linux. I didn't do the "Upgrade" part because I had tried 3 times previously and gotten an error that froze/broke the installation because of a "ftp::bad host name" error.

I login as root to mess around, and find that I don't have any mention of a "Mandrake Control Center," or anything else. The graphical interface I'm using is... IceWM (I installed it once before and just got a red screen with a clock and the terminal).

I've just been messing around, and an now very confused. I don't have any icons on my desktop. I have access to one application, xMag (It magnifies a part of the screen), and the terminal.

Did I do something wrong? IF so, what did I do, and how can I fix it?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

atwookie,

It's been a while since I played around with Mandy, or ice-wm for that matter. Right-clicking anywhere on the desktop should give you a menu. You may have to run Mandrake Control Center from a command line.

In the terminal (as root) type "drakconf"

If that works, you have the control center.

And there are no icons on the desktop except for WM's like KDE and Gnome.

I just opened the terminal, and typed in drakconf. Got a "command not found" error and it returned me to bash.

Is my easiest solution to reinstall using the 3 CD set, or... is there some way anybody can think of to mess with my current installation?

I'm going to try installing KDE and see if I can boot to that instead of IceWM (It sounds like KDE is more user-friendly and I'm suprised its not on there by default, or at least the option to have KDE/Gnome).

I appreciate the help, but if anybody's got more to spare...

Edit:

My main concern is that something is wrong with my installation. I don't seem to have KDE, or anything else that Mandrake says that it comes with... I'm going to try installing KDE/Qt and see if I can't get something that works. I don't mind not having software, so long as I can get it...

You don't have the control center. I suggest you reinstall, making sure you select the proper packages (the automatic package selection is probably good enough).

I fixed my problem. My friend (knows far more than I) helped me urpmi some packages that I needed (like kde, mcc, etc) and I'm now up and running with a functional system.

Thanks for the help everybody.
