No DNS with Mandrake Linux 9.2

I downloaded, burned and then installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 on my Micron notebook and everything is working great except for the fact that I can't get DNS to work properly. I'm using a Linksys router and can ping and load pages with IP addresses, but not resolve them.

The Linksys router also acts a DHCP box, so I've been testing different configurations using it and then a static IP address, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Is there a setting somewhere I might have missed during install?

Thanks,
Jeff

My two other boxes run Win XP and are working fine with this particular router.

cat your /etc/resolv.conf file. This file is where you'll have your DNS servers. Typically a DNS should update your DNS (depending) however you should be able to staticly put them in this file and it should work. It'll look something like this:

nameserver <DNS_IP_ADDRESS>
nameserver <SECONDARY_DNS_IP_ADDRESS>

you can also use the "search" command to actually search for 'em. I personally have never used this method nor do I have any idea how it works. Goodluck!

Go into "Configure your computer" (Mandrake Control Center) and select "Network and Internet" then select "Drakconnect". In there you can choose to configure your internet connection and select DHCP. Once you have done that:

Check the file /etc/resolv.conf it should list your DNS servers to use. Mine looks like this:

search dsl-verizon.net
nameserver 4.2.2.4
nameserver 4.2.2.5
nameserver 4.2.2.6

You can see the three name servers being used and the domain being serached. Yours will look different. If you want, and your router serves DNS for you, just put the IP address of your router in that file "nameserver x.x.x.x" x being your routers ip and the system will query your router and your router will do DNS caching for you. If your DHCP client is working right the resolv.conf gets set automatically for you, but as alwasy in gnu-linux based systems you alwasy have options.

Good Luck

Thanks... I checked the file listed above and the only difference I can see is that the 127.0.0.1 local interface is listed first followed by the two correct DNS IP addresses.

Even when I manually edit the file to remove 127.0.01 it's added back in when the computer request an IP address through DHCP.

Why's the 127.0.0.1 listed first?

Thanks,
Jeff

The problem is that /etc/resolv.conf is being over-written each time the lease is renewed from the DHCP server. The following link may be of use in solving your problem:
http://linux.cudeso.be/linuxdoc/tweaky_net.php

Essentially, you need to add the line
PEERDNS=no
to the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
