i downloaded mandriva 07 free on firefox... no prob.. took about 4 hours... i burned the first disk on roxio and put in into my laptop and it didnt read it... so my question is... do i have to use a torrent to download it?? or am i doing something wrong?? please help me! haha
If you want to minimise chances of your downloads being corrupt, you are better off using a download manager such as kget instead of Firefox. Using a torrent is also another good option.
so a torrent is not needed? ive noticed that in mandriva 06 after the download... the disk 1 was an icon that was openable... the 07's are not... should i redownload or what? lol
I wonder how people are succeding installation of free version of Mandriva 2007. I was frustrated by it and switched to others. I think the problem is not of download, it is (if I am permitted to say so with a less than basic knowledge of linux) something of bug???
I installed 4 cd version of 2007 mandriva. It did everything as if it not only recognized my computer but also me and my surroundings. However, after restart, it stops to response after about 45% booting is completed.
Then, I tried mandriva one live cd version of 2007. It too reaches smoothly to about 45% of booting and then stops functioning. So, I request some experts to specifically check 2007 version of Mandriva.

ke1thb_00 sometimes people make the
mistake of not burning the iso as an iso
(special menu to burn an iso, instead of burning
it as one file)

This is presomptuous.
You are better pressing <alt f3> or <alt f4>
to check the error messages.
There are many parameters that can help installation.
Also if your equipment is super new, or if you have a bad burn or bad media you will have some trouble

When I go to verbose mode, it gives series of OK message, nothing is seen bad. Just when it reaches to checking for partition, it says last OK message and then what it would try to do, I can't see.
The same is the case for both Live cd and installed version. That is why I have requested somebody who knows the sequence of booting in which it would check "what" after checking for partition.
After that, no key works, computer stops responding. That is why I had to give up it.
Trying from live CD, the following were the messages that I could trace until freezing.
Loading default keymap [OK]
Setting hostname local host [OK]
remounting root file system in read write mode: mount:function not implemented [failed]
Setting up logical volume management: no vol groups found [OK]
Clearing software suspend 2 signatures ...done
Enabling /etc/fstab/swaps: [OK]
Mounting local filesystem [OK]
Mounting loopback fs: [OK]
Loading compose keys: compose.latin.inc
Loading /usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/include/compose.latin.inc.gz [OK]
The backspace key sends: ^? [OK]
Enabling swap space [OK]
Starting net profile [OK]
INIT: Entering runlevel: 5
Entering non-interactive startup
Activating compat-mode for non-LSB-script rc.local
Starting system logger: [OK]
Starting kernel logger: [OK]
Starting numluck: [OK]
Starting system message bus [OK]
Starting atd [OK]
Starting wltool [OK]
checking if partition have enough free diskspace: [OK]
Then nothing happens and after waiting for long time I have to choose hard shut down button.
FYI: my laptop has Japanese keypad setting, if this may be helpful to the problem.
Howdy! I've the same probelm on my HP pavilion dv6000t laptop. I'm getting the exact same error message. Below is my system information.
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83 GHz)
- 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
- 1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)
- 120 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
- Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
Could somebody help? I'm completely a new bee to Linux.
I had no problem at all installing Mandriva 2007.1 (Spring) Free.
I downloaded the full install DVD image file (ISO) from one of the US FTP sites (forget what one). THE only problem I had was if I tried to select individual packages for install during the OS setup process, but as long as I selected base packages (Internet station, Game Station, Office, GNOME, KDE, exc.) and let individual packages default, I was fine.
It may well be a hardware prob., as I am using it on a home-built desktop system - although not specifically built with Linux in mind - not thinking any particular OS at all, just what I wanted to be able to do with it, but......

Yes, I tried some. Alt F3 or F4 or no key works after that stage. No way except pressing the power off botton. I supposed the problem occurred due to language as my laptop has japanese keyboard. However, I tried in another IBM japanese laptop and it worked. I don't know why many of linux distributions simply don't work properly for my particular laptop. I got failure in SUSE 10.2 (?) too. At last stage of installation of 4GB dvd version, it simply showed error message. I have now Mepis 6.5 working smoothly. I really love it, now with 3D feature. Then, With Mepis in one drive, I installed Ubuntu 7.04 in next one. It wrote in its GRUB the window and Mepis too. But it too could not work properly/unsatisfactory. When i play a video song by any of the players, the display is not there only sound and black screen. Now, I think, there are still a lot of challenges for Linux community to make distribution more versatile. I wonder why Windows xp can fit smoothly virtually on any computer but Linux is still trickling over hardware issues.
Anyway, thanks for your support! It is due to this forum, now I quickly turned from newbie to a somehow Linux adict.
I've purchased Mandriva Flash 4GB recently. I opened a case in expert.mandriva.com. Waiting for response. As Rohini said, there is no response pressing those keys. Laptop just hangs and have to force shutdown.
