"Mandriva 2007 free" Users

Does it worth the download?
I mean, do you like it, is it good, or no major modifications?
I'm already using Suse-10.2 but I'm searching for a secondary distro.

Thanks

The best ways is:

- Reading reviews in LQ.org about Mandriva (link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/reviews/index.php/cat/2);

- Reading reviews at distrowatch (link: http://distrowatch.com/)

- Trying out yourself ^_^. This is probably the wisest choice since it is a secondary distro. It is really more a matter of taste, since both are very similar, like using rpm's...

I think it's fine. I have both the FREE and Discovery (commercial) versions and frankly, I think the FREE version is better, since the Discovery version is targeted at the desktop and is quite limited, while the FREE version includes developer tools, a more flexible installation program, etc. The only advantage of the commercial distribution is that it contains proprietary stuff that should make installation and configuration easier (drivers for Atheros wireless chipsets, LinDVD, a one-month subscription to Cedega, etc.).

Incidentally, K3B worked well for me burning DVD isos. I used Mandriva 2007 and K3B to produce several Linux DVDs. Maybe you have a hardware or configuration problem, shorty943.

2006 works beautifully on my old Athlon 1.6. After having tried 6or7 times to download and burn the new ISO's including transfering the ISO's across my home LAN to my Winslows box, and my laptop, I have decided to bite the bullet. Even Emailed Mandriva and asked them to check these forums, with lots of please's and thank you's of course. Too many reported problems at the moment for me. Maybe next year.

Joint, you actually got SuSE to work? Kudo's to you, that's just one of the distro's I gave up on.

No config or hardware snafu's I can find in my server's box, everything works fine.

I think maybe some thing got all weird in the download, if at first you don't succeed, blame somebody else? No wait that's the Californian way, scratch that idea. Delete the download and try another mirror site, that's better.

Thank's and merry christmas to you cogar.

regards shorty943.

Thank you. Merry Christmas to you as well.

For what it's worth, I always use BitTorrent (Ktorrent) to download ISOs. I recall hearing or reading somewhere that there is a lower likelihood of getting a bad ISO that way. (Of course, using md5sum on the downloaded ISO should confirm whether the file is error-free or not.)

Don't seem to be able to get a handle on Bittorrent. Probably my old steam-ship engineers brain, runs at a few hundred rev's rather than thousands of them. Do you think I should download some reference material or just dive on in and damn the torpedoes? Keep in touch, I'm enjoying the education. Better than I remember during school days. email - shorty943@gmail.com regards shorty.

Switch on, make coffee, make bed, do dishes, mop floor, look at screen, go do more house work.
Have I got it close?

Joking of course. You run these new distro's on museum pieces? Well done. Used to run Caldera on a 486x66 years ago, slowest machine now is this beasty I sit at now.

Athlon 1.6Gbx32 bit, 256Mb and 4x40Gb disks on a PCI raid card.

Only bitch is my speaker set, actually make that whisper set, maybe the wires to the speakers are to skinny won't let sound through?

Seasons greetings to you and your's

regards shorty.

One or more of the Mandriva repositories have Ktorrent. (I recall it is not on the installation CDs or DVD.) Just install the package and then you are mostly ready to go. From that point, "downloading" something via torrent is similar to any other download. Click on the torrent link and you should get a dialog asking if you want to download the file using Ktorrent. It will download a small package with the information the program needs to keep track of everything and then start saving the file. Probably the only thing you may need to do in addition to installing Ktorrent is to forward your ports. It is a relatively straightforward process, typically described in the documentation for your router, DSL modem, or whatever you use to connect to the Internet.
