After the installation, log in as root to the text console.

Then once in

service dm stop

Then to set up your display type

XFDrake
hey that worked great

changed my resolution and rebooted and it worked.

thanks again

Change resolution? Mine was 1024x768. It didn't work with 800x600 though...

That is because you are currently using the unaccelerated "generic" drivers.

You'll need to get your internet connection up and running, then grab the ATI driver RPM's (actually just add the whole site to URPMI) and URPMI the drivers.

THEN run XFdrake as I instructed, and adjust for the actual capabilities of your display, and finally make any needed changes to the /etc/XF86Config file...

I was wondering, couldn't I just load the drivers to that exact folder and burn it onto a cd?

Yes, but you'll be advised to download entire repositories...

e.g. if you use Thac's updated RPM's you'll want to download EVERYTHING and burn that the CD.

(heh: that's what I do for new installs....)

Ultimately you'll end up burning CD's for RPM's which you'll only use once or twice.

I've done this enough to discover that it's a waste of time unless you are setting up many systems.

If you have a fast internet connection setting up URPMI sources will suffice.

And I can do this directly from the console after the login even if I can't see my desktop? Could you, if you have time, please give me a step-by-step guide as to how to download/install, or the exact topic which sais how to from the console step-by-step. I am a total noob when it comes to linux, seriously :P. I appreciate your help so far, thanks.

You can configure your Internet connection via the console (if it's not already up...)

by running

drakconf

from the command line as root.

Assuming it's already up, you can (sigh) follow the directions on my sig to set up your urpmi sources.

The "black" screen image in easyurpmi gets posted (cut and copied) to a console screen, (text console).

Since on your Linux system you don't have the GUI up yet, you can merely type things in by hand.

In your shoes I'd merely follow the directions I've already posted to get a display up temporarily.

ANYTHING you can log into will do, even if it looks horrible.

The idea is to get onto the internet and set up your URPMI sources so that you can download the ATI drivers from Thac's site.

The step by step has been already given repeatedly.

e.g.

service dm stop

XFdrake

service dm start

login

follow the directions on my sig...

Add Thac's web site...

blah, blah, blah

I also have another question. If I wanted, couldn't I just put in another spare video card temporarily to get Linux up and running, then insert my radeon back again and it should boot then I could get the drivers?

Also, on your sig, what link exactly do I type in once the internet is up in the console to get the urpmi resources then startup the desktop to download the drivers? None of the links appear to work. And what exactly was thac's link, looked it up, I saw it before but I can't find it now...

If you can ping out to the internet, and resolve hostnames you can follow the directions in my sig.

Which "links" do not appear to work?

I was thinking, first, to just buy the official cd pack, which I assume comes with the correct drivers and will install on my radeon x700 during installation. Is this correct? Also, which is the appropriate one to choose. http://www.linuxcdshop.ca/cat--Mandrake--Mandrake.html

OH! Is this the thac's link I need to add from the console ?

urpmi.addmedia thacs.rpms http://rpm.nyvalls.se/10.1/RPMS with hdlist.cz

also, i dont really see how to add the resources in your sig, i need a browser, i cant directly do it, unless there is a way, then a link would be helpful

Alright. I am proud to say I have made some progress

I added THAC's resources via this topic and followed all of the instructions up to and including "urpmi xorg-x11"

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...c&pagenumber=2

From here, I do not know what to do, or how to add the other resources in your signature. I need to add what your sig sais, then install, then load my desktop somehow to be able to download the ati drivers.

All I did so far was install urpmi xorg-x11, but that still hasn't made my desktop work, probly cause I need to add your sources link.

Please advise, and be proud, as I have made progress!!
