type 'start x'

if that works you need to edit you inittab file to be runlevel 5, it's probably at 3 now.

I have the same problem.

During the install, I couldnt get it to give me a graphics set-up that worked when I hit "Test", and so i just carried on and thought oh well never mind...but it turns out that it doesnt boot into KDE or GNOME because the card isnt recognised

This needs a fix, any help for me and kekropas would be greatly appreciated!

Exclamation

Same problem with me when installing 9.2. My monitor is Sony 200sf which was in the list of monitors. The card I have is Gaigabyte Radeon 9200SE powered by ATI. During the installation, I could not find the card name, so I had to pick ATI Radeon. KDE or startx will not work it gives: Fatal server error no screens found.

I searched the internet for linux driver for the card, I found RPM package here http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html.

Then I copied the rpm to /tmp folder. I typed "rpm -i fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm" I got the follwoing message:
file /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 from install fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8 conflicts with file from package libxfree86-4.3-23mdk

I tried rpm command without options, still. I am not familiar with rpm installation, but this what I found on the net.

I would apprecite some help here.

Same problem here, at first I couldn't install the rpm with the normal -i. Then I tried the rpm -i --force and the rpm installed but I have no 3D acceleration .

As many people I couln't install Mandrake 9.2 (download edition) because I did not find a suitable driver for my video card (Nvidia GeForce4 448). Even generic drivers for GeForce did not allow me to launch startx .

I would like to know if users of other versions (other than the download one) have se same problem

The following page
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/products/92/comparison
states that there are no drivers provided for video card, is it the reason of our common problem? (I expected a minimum from generic drivers !)

Thanks

Wow, its not just me with this problem. I also have an active thread on this issue.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=119029

I have installed a couple of the ATI drivers in the last year, but NEVER had the problems that I am having now. I don't even get 'fglrxinfo' to show that the driver is loaded.

I started a thread about this problem a few days ago. The fix was to edit the XF86Config-4 file in the /etc/X11 directory and to change the text in the line for the NVIDIA driver from "nvidia" to "nv" After I did that, the X environment came right up.

Hope this helps you.....

Thanks chilehead for your reply but it doesn't solve my problem.

Do you use the download version (I guess that my problems come from the use of this version) or the Power Pack ?

Ok, I finally got my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro working under Mandrake 9.2. To see the steps that I went through, see http://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...threadid=119029

It seems that the Radeon drivers that come with XFree86 4.3/MDK 9.2 does not work with the 'newer' 9600 and later series.

I hope this helps.

In order to solve my problem (Nvidia GeForce 4 448Go driver prooblem) I tried to install the Nvidia driver, but for that purpose I also need the kernel source (not provided with the download edition).

Unfortunately I found two files on the web:
kernel-2.4.22.10mdk-1-1mdk.src.rpm and kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586.rpm
which don't have the same size. Does anybody know which one corresponds to the kernel of the download edition ?

Thanks

kekropas,

The thread that I posted is:

"MDK9.2 - ATI fglrx - no 3D hardware support"

The thread is still active.

-----

jfi, you may wish to start a thread on the NVIDIA driver issue, as this one is primarily discussing the issues with the ATI drivers for the Radeon 9600 cards.
