Mandrake 10.1 install failing

This is my first attempt at installing Linux. My computer skills are very good, I support software for a living, and have an in depth knowledge of OS/2, Warp Server, Windows 2003 server, XP, NT 4.0 and 3.51, 2000, etc. I also have a decent working knowledge of HP UX.

I am attempting to install on HDD 1, which is a slave to HDD 0. HDD 0 is running Windows XP Pro.

My hardware is AMD Athlon, clock speed is 849.9 mhz, 256 MB ram, VIA KT 400(A)/600 chipset.

I am getting the following kernel message:

(4)EXT2 -fs warning: checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended

The last few lines in the console are below:

Code:
*Total Memory: 256 Mbytes
*trying to load /sysroot/tmp/image/install/stage2/mdkinst_stage2.bz2 as a ramdisk
*mounting /dev/ram3 on /sysroot/tmp/stage2 as type ext2
*fopen(stage1.c:383) failed: I/O error
*unsetting automatic
I have run a test on my memory, it is OK.

I have tried a couple of suggestions that I found in other forums, such as disabling the hard drives in the BIOS, and disabling DMA.

So, I need assistance from people who have successfully installed Mandrake, and others who have had experience with this error, no matter the distro.

Thanks!

I can't get into a console window. I never even get booted into Linux.

Well mate do a complete reinstall and wipe all the Linux partitions .While your at it is this Mandriva 2006?
Can you boot from that slave drive . I thought the boot must be on the first drive hdd0. At least while installing did you elect to write the boot record on the hdd0 ? Only suggestions here as no one else has jumped in !

Here's a posting by someone with a similar problem and claims he successfully installed running in expert mode. No idea why that would work?

Cheers.

bobbelfield, thanks for the suggestions. This is Mandrake 10.1. I have also tried Madriva 2006 Free, and it won't even get this far. It hard locks my PC with no display.

I am going to try and simplify my setup tomorrow. I am going to remove the second HDD and the DVD ROM, and try installing with just one HDD and a CD ROM.

NoStop, I have already tried the install in expert mode, and the kernel fails to load in exactly the same spot.

10.1 install

There were some problems with 10.1

10.0 and 10.2 have been very solid. I think you are on the right track with installation on 1 HDD just for practice .
I have installed MDK on various combinations of single HDDs, two HDDs, dual boots with Wxp, etc., and Mandrake has located and partitioned flawlessly every time.

good luck

Thanks for the advice, everybody.

I downloaded a Live CD for PCLinux OS, and am running from that for now.

After I get a feel for it, I will probably install it on my machine.

Mandriva has released and installable live cd called Mandriva One. You could download it and see if that will install on your computer (It has newer package versions than the official 2006 Free release).
