Question making numlock turn on at kdm startup

This has been puzzling me for a few weeks.

I'm running Mandrake 10.0 Official with KDE updated to 3.2.3 and the Kernel.
I've logged in as root, started the KDE control centre, and opened the Pheripherals section.

Under keyboard, the "Numlock on KDE startup" is set to 'Turned On' yet when I log out and go to log back in again I have to press the numlock button to make the keypad work, which is a bit annoying when I've got 8-digit numbers as my passwords.

Any ideas?

It is enabled by default, and....... <checks>.... still is.
The numlock service only affects consoles (Alt+F1-6), but not X though.

Any more ideas?
