Why don't you just download the binary package that does not need to be compiled.

i downloaded the tar.bz2 file and did ./configure in the terminal, and got the same errors. where can i find the binary package?

The binary packages are available on the mysql website. On the download page, they are listed just before source.

mysql is already installed, i'm trying to install php 5.0.4

Install bison as the error says.

i tried to install bison, but he said i needed GNU M4, so i installed that and flex to. now if i try to install bison, he gives the error that i need to install GNU M4, but that's already installed

Did you install the packages using urpmi?

no, i just extracted them and used ./configure

Save yourself time and effort by installing dependencies using urpmi since all dependencies are resolved automatically.
