ide-scsi emulation: multiple drives shown

I have installed Mandrake 9.2 for a friend. He has a DVD Rom and a DVD writer. After the installation, on running harddrake, the system showed him with 7 scsi drives. etc/lilo.conf had an entry in the append line to the effect "hdd=ide-scsi". The extra drives were in /mnt and also in /dev.

I then added "hdc=ide-scsi" and after rebooting was invited to install more scsi drives, and ended up with another 7. One set was at 0,0,0....etc, and the other at 0,1,0....etc. In hardrake and in k3b the drives are shown correctly identified as the hardware they are, its just that there are 7 of each when there should be one of each.

The system was unstable, crashing and freezing. I therefore went back and took out the ide-scsi entries, and it seems to work fine, except that of course one cannot now use K3b.

I have heard from one of the K3b people that he has seen this problem before but has no idea what causes it.

Does anyone know (a) what is causing it (b) what to do to fix it?

I have naively tried to edit /mnt and also /dev, which of course did not work.

Thanks

Gustave

Try setting it up with ide-scsi again and make sure that you get a lilo menu when you boot then start typing Linux MAX_SCSI_LUNS=1 then the enter key and see if that helps if it works put it in the append line as well to be used every boot. Replace Linux with the name of the kernel image you will be booting from the menu.
