how to boot a non bootable installation?
mandrake 9.1, had a partial loss of memory modules (512 went to 384), and it apparently has taken down my mandrake installation. is there a way to boot up an install so that at a min, i can get some data recovery? getting a seperate kernel configured is what comes to mind, though i'm not sure how to do this?
tried using knoppix 3.2, though i was unsuccessful in accessing the partitions correctly. tried to cd to the different mount points while as root, though didn't have any success.
any pointers in this regard would be appreciated.
i have reiserfs file system, though if ext3, would there be better chances of recovering os build through some repair commands? i've seen some mention that ext3 is better, and reiserfs falls short in this regard- (leaving RAID as the only means to ensure data integrity). some thought on this as well?
