I enabled ACPI in Mandrake 9.1. I could see battery icon and charging status now. But it cannot calculate the time remaining (says 0:00 remaining even with 99% charged battery). But I have another problem, The CPU fan get turned on every 30 seconds for a minute or so. Well, this happens even with ACPI turned off. But apparently with XP, the CPU is cool.....Any ideas/help will be greatly appreciated.
The CPU fan should be on constantly, the RPM may change if it's adjustable, but it should only ever be off if the whole PC is. Most systems won't boot if they don't detect a fan.
I suspect it is on, just not spinning quickly enough for you to hear it. I've never seen a system that didn't have the CPU fan spinning constantly while it's turned on...
Is there any other Fan other than CPU Fan? If yes, than I guess the other one is ON in Linux and not in Windows. It makes lot of noise. While running XP it seldom turns ON, but when it does it makes the same noise.
Actually, being an HP the noise you're hearing could be the PSU fan, I have a compaq machine at work (compaq owned by HP of course) and it's noisy briefly when you turn it on and then becomes virtually silent.
