club powerpack isos

Hi,

I work for a company that does several linux services/consulting and we also have a linux cd shop.

I am however a Mandrake Club member, so I have access to the 6 cd powerpack download of the 10.1 official release.

Obviously we cannot distribute these because they contain 3rd party drivers and commercial applications.

Looking at cd's 3 and 6 i can see the directories "Drivers" , "Applications" as well as the usual media(x) directories.

So if i edit the images and remove these directories what else would I have to edit (maybe from the 1st disc) so that we can sell/distribute images without any problems of selling non GPL software?

If anybody has some experience with this please reply and help me.

Much appreciated!

Only the first 3 cd's are allowed to be re-distributed without having to pay.

This is Mandrake policy. And you agreed to it when you became a member.

well cd 3 of the club iso differs from cd 3 on the public ftp, what shall i do? ADSL bandwidth is not cheap in South Africa, we are capped on 3gb of traffic and that's up and down :/

It's going to be a waiste of time to download the public 3 cd images, as I said i can see what directories need to be removed. After removing these directories you are only left with "GPL" software so I cannot see why you are throwing that in my face.

You are not helping me, so if you cannot help don't bother replying.

If anyone has experience editing Mandrake iso images then please reply.

The last thing I want is for someone to buy the pack from us and then the install insists on the disc for the NVIDIA drivers! So if there is anything else that needs to be removed or edited please let me know.

Sgrayban's post was to the point and on-topic. If you want to distribute Mandrake legally, you should either use the download of the "public" version or apply to become a Mandrake reseller.

Mandrake strickly FORBID's distributing the power pack CD's. Read there license.

http://www.mandrakesoft.com/company/legal-faq/#license

If you think I'm not helping then I'm sorry. But the fact remains you can not give any of the cd's away for any reason.

If your capped at bandwith then complain to your ISP because that isn't mandrakes fault and they wont care.

(edited)

I just wanted to add that since you think I have no clue or anyone else here for that matter what the License is, then since you work for a software company why don't you ask Mandrake yourself instead of coming here and asking a lame question like this and then insulting me.

You are very ungratefull and I took your comment as a insult. I gave the answer that Mandrake will tell you also. You think that just because you removed the questionable directories or files its ok still. Its not. EVER. There license says CD's not files or directories. That means YOU CAN NOT REPACKAGE THERE POWER PACK CD's.

You have to download there public ISO's and burn them. The you can do what ever you want. Period and end of this thread.

i'm sorry, but please tell me where i said that "no one else has a clue"?

But FYI I have never read that licence. I would also like to add that on the first ISO image there is a "COPYING" text file which is the "GPL licence" and no where on the images does it say "YOU CANNOT DISTRIBUTE"! I'm at a client now so when I get back to the office I will post the licence so you can read. You will notice that licence is the licence you get with all free software.

If it's such a problem why don't Mandrake put a propper licence? Don't you agree?

Oh and the thread is not "period" as you so claim because lo and behold I'm replying ;-)

I am not helping? You don't like the answer I gave and then you get pissed at me.

Your whole quote above screams at me and you calling me a idiot and I have no clue what I am talking about.

And the License on the CD's are super-ceeded by the License on there website.

Either learn the Law or your going to get you and your company is real trouble.

I know more then you do and its very obvious. Now go troll on another forum.

You cannot re-distribute the Power Pack CD's in anyway shape or form. Doing so breaks the License for the other 2 CD's. Including re-packaging them.

That License is plain and to the point.

8.I am a Mandrakeclub Member. Can I distribute "Power Pack", "Power Pack+", "Mandrakelinux Move", "AMD64 Edition" or "Power Pack DVD Edition" Mandrakelinux versions that I downloaded as a Member of Mandrakeclub?
No. These products contain third party software which are covered by proprietary licenses and are thus not redistributable. Additionally, these are premium products offered to Club members as part of their subscription. Thus, they are not intended to be freely distributed. However, if you wish to become a Mandrakesoft distributor, we would gladly welcome you as a Mandrakesoft Partner and establish a win/win agreement. See our Partner Page.
What part of that legal agreement are you having a issue with? The whole thing?

Well, obviously an emotive subject. Can we calm down please. equinox - if you wish to become a Mandrake reseller, contact Mandrake and find out how to go about it - they can give you the definitive answer. FWIW, what you are planning to do sounds to me like a heck of a lot of work to turn 3 "official" cds into 3download cds. Wh not just download the download versions?

sgrayban - I'd just step away from the thread.

I do not think u r an idiot, now u r just insinuating :/

relax...

anyhow, we'll download it...

My point is, it would be much clearer if these proprietry licences were on the iso images...

Here's an example, we have the 5 cd set of Suse 9.2 Pro. We can distribute/sell it... The handy thing is, during the install a popup message will appear asking the user if you accept the macromedia licence for the flash plugin rpm, or when you update and you install Ms ttf fonts you also get a licence which you can either accept or not. Makes sense...

Anyways, closed.

Enough. Sgrayban has unsubmitted from this thread, so there is no need to go on about it.
