Changing screen resolution

Hi, I know this has been asked before, but either I don't understand the answer or I'm not sure if it's relevant to me. I've got Mandriva 2007 Spring One on an old computer (Celeron, 600MHz, 319.0 MB memory), and I can't change the screen resolution to what I want. I don't like working in 800x600, but if I change to 1024x768, the top and bottom of the desktop stretches off the screen. As far as I can tell, Linux has detected my monitor properly, so what can I do to fix this?

My graphics card and monitor:

Intel(r) 82810 Graphics Controller...
Intel(r) 82810-DC100 Graphics Controller...
Intel(r) 82810E Graphics Controller...

Dell Monitor Model no. E771p

Use the monitor's controls (usually buttons on the front) to shrink the size of the display.

That was one of the first things I tried and it didn't work. I tried it again, and oddly enough it worked this time - thanks.

I think doing this probably helped:
in Mandriva/System/Configure Your Computer/Hardware/Screen Resolution

and it offered to install something, and I said 'Yes'.
