Angry Changing refresh rates

Yes, I know other people have asked but there has been NO clear solution as to how to set your monitor's refresh rate. Mine is set at a maximum of 100 Hz, but Mandrake 9.1 only boots up at 75 Hz and it's annoying.

I cannot edit my XFConfig-4 file as I do not have access to write that file. So, how do I edit this file manually and what should I edit? I know there's something to do with scanlines but it's so complicated. In Windows XP, you just go to your monitors setting and click 85Hz and BAM! Windows does it for you just like that. Help!

use the vim editor
from command line(as root),
vim /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
press 'i'
change the refresh rates...
press ESC, then ':wq' (there is a colon before wq,i.e, ':wq')
then startx.
-------------------
you can do this by doing an 'xf86config',though this will create a new XF86Config instead of the -4 one.if you want to do this way, just delete the -4 one and X will proceed with XF86Config one.

You're going to need root access to do this.

Go to the Mandrake Control Center and choose hardware->XFDrake. Once there you can set everything that has to do with graphics cards and monitors. I Think in your case you need to click on monitor and find your monitor or choose custom and enter the info that came with the monitor. Be careful here! The wrong info could possibly screw up you monitor. After that you'll probably need to kill the X server. You can do this by logging out or by hitting Strg+Alt+Backspace (I think).
