Hi,
I just installed linux (mandrake 9.1) and I found out that I can not play audio cds. After further investigation, I found that I get Input/Output Error when audio cd is put in the cdrom
doing ls /mnt/cdrom gives
ls: /mnt/cdrom: Input/output error
(both root and regular user)
Linux installation cd however is read fine by both regular user and root. (lists the contents of the CD)
That's normal behavior when attempting to mount an audio cd; they're not mountable in linux. What app are you using to play cds? Do you have a cable going from your cd drive to your sound card? If not, try playing in xmms. Just navigate to /mnt/cdrom when selecting the files to play.
xmms does not see files on the /mnt/cdrom. so I can not use xmms.
cd rom is connected to the sound card.
After my first attempt at the linux installation, I could see the audio cd. (Kcd was playing the cd, however my sound card was not properly installed, so I couldn't hear a thing)
Now Kcd gives the Input/Output error.
Check this: XMMS>right click>options>preferences>tab Audio plugins I/O>Output plugins>pulldown list: What do you find there?
Also check this: In the same tab go to input plugins and select the one that plays CDs' in your case, click on configure and check that this plugin points to the correct device, this may be pointing to the wrong CD ROM if you have more than one!.
After trying multiple thiings (and spending over 2 hours) I decided to reinstall mandrake (takes only 30 min, and since I just installed it over last weekend, I dont have too many settings, data or anything like that) and now I am listhening to my cds fine. (However I would have liked to know what the problem was.) the /etc/fstab looks exactly the way it looked before.
However I still have the problem with the max sound being 31%.
After basic install of mandrake, if you start say kscd, and look at the config section, by default it points at /dev/cdrom
Your cdrom or cdrw or whatever maynot actually be "cdrom" to the system. In my case, I have to tell it to look at /dev/scd0 because I only have a dvd drive and a cdrw, the cdrw uses "scsi emulation" often used by "burners" and that's the only way that I can make it see an audio disc.
Thanks John,
I had seen your other post about similar problem and tried to configure KsCD, however in my case /dev/cdrom is the right place to look at. I still dont know why I was having that problem and why reinstall solved it. Someday, hopefully, I will know.
