Exclamation Can't Install Firefox 1.0.4

Hello. I'm pretty new to the Linux community, and have recently downloaded & installed Mandriva 10.2. It came with a slightly out of date version of Firefox, so I've been trying to upgrade. I've downloaded Firefox 1.0.4 for Linux from mozilla and decompressed it into it's own folder using archive manager (default decompression program I guess..) I then click on 'home' which goes to 'Konqueror' (apparently Mandriva's version of My Computer) and am presented with the files. It appears that the file firefox-installer-bin is the executable that I want, but when I double click on it does nothing. I've tried right-clicking & choosing 'open in new window', which will pop up a dialogue box asking if I realy want to execute, and then a new window that is blank. I've also tried going through something I found called Nautilus that also appears to be a program manager, and also nothing happens when clicking the 'firefox-installer-bin'.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!

RM

mrcheeks,

Thank you for your quick reply!

When I type ./firefox-installer as per that link, this is what it gives me:

./firefox-installer-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Any ideas?

you have to install the rpm which provides that file, i don't know which. It can become the well known rpm distros nightmare ..., well you have to look for it on the internet.

The easiest way I've found to upgrade FireFox is to simply run rpmdrake.

Try this:
Click Menu ->
System ->
Configuration ->
Packaging -> Mandrakelinux update.

Install any 'normal" updates. Then click on Security updates, scroll down until you see the FireFox 1.0.2 fix. This will update your FireFox to 1.0.4.

Hope this helps.

If you have run through Easy Urpmi then updating Firefox (and all the other programs on your system) is just a case of going to the Mandrake Control Centre (System->Configuration->Configure Your Computer->Software) and clicking on the icon to update your software. Once there just do all normal, bugfixes and security updates (its obvious when you're there). After that is done Firefox will still say its 1.02, but it'll be the 1.02 with all the Mozilla fixes up to 1.04 and it should work lovely!

..and all the other software will be updated. If possible, use the stuff provided in the repositories or RPMs specifically for Mandrake/Mandriva/MDK so your computer knows whats where

In the menu system, open RPMDrake (System / Configuration / Packaging / Install Software). Use the search function to find the package containing the file needed. Enter the file name in the search box. Click the drop down menu and select 'in file names'. Click the Search button. The package(s) containing the needed file(s) will be displayed in the search results list. Click the check box and click the Install button to install the package containing the needed file.
