IIRC you get entries in your system log when the line is synced, etc.
Try piping tail -f into something that'll filter out the lines you want?

I tried the following: cat /var/log/syslog | tail -f but no results only some HP printer stuff came out (I have a HP printer witch is not connected at the moment...) anyway I can see in dmesg when the link is up during the boot proces but it hapends when sometimes the modem drops connection or the link goes down... I want to know when or why is this happening....
THX

I think you'll find that's cating the current content of /var/log/syslog and so then the tail -f has nothing new to follow.

Try tail -f /var/log/messages | some grep r.ex. here

I used a Speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modem for years, but now we've got a router, so I can't easily see exactly how the relevant log lines start to try come up with the filtering command.

IIRC there's been several different ways to use that modem, various kernel and userspace modules and utils. The initial part to load the firmware into the modem and sync the line can be configured to be more verbose, and the subsequent pppd call adsl gives regular pppd log entries about the connection being up or down.

I got no probs using the modem (but it's a piece of sh*t anyway and I never use one of that again ) I'm going to switch to a eth modem to.... I'm just intrested in diagnosing stuff... my script which loads the firmware is called speedtch so I'm gonna look at that to find a more verbose output..
THX for replying as I said I was just curious how to do that....
