A question about legacy kernel ?

Hello !

I have a small tiny question, about what a legacy kernel is.

I had Mandriva powerpack 2006 with a "not legacy" kernel, and for money reasons I upgraded to the free version, KDE One 2007.

And I just noticed my kernel was now a "legacy" kernel.

uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.17-5mdvlegacy

I know my question might look awkward, but is that something bad or restrictive, if you know, to have a legacy kernel ?

I don't really understand what that may imply, so, even though I supposed there's nothing to actually worry about, I prefer to ask and be sure of that...

Thanks if someone can tell me

Well the kernel is open source, so I can't see why somebody could call it a "legacy kernel" or a "non-legacy kernel" my best guess, be it wrong or not, is that the paid-for-version-kernel has something additional inside that the non-paid-version-kernel doesn't; but I don't think it's a thing to worry about. After all if you think there's something missing, you can recompile it yourself (which is not as difficult as it's generally believed).

AFAI understand
Legacy = The Mandriva kernel for i586 based processors i586-optimised, multiple processor support, no highmem support (up to 880 MB)

as opposed to i686-optimised

Anyhow you can DIY your kernel
