2006 is slowly starting to become a nightmare

Ever since I upgrade from MDK10,1 to MDK2006, I've come across some pretty distressing things. The main issues I'd like to get cleared up are:
  • USB

I have a somewhat serious usb issue, here. I have a usb printer, and it seems that I can fire off any number of print jobs, but they don't print until I reboot my system and I'm watching all the services come up verbosely.

On top of that, I'm having trouble adressing my USB flash drive. With 10.1 I had /etc/fstab setup with the following line to address my flash drive:
    Code:
    /dev/sda /mnt/usb_drive noauto,rw,users 0 0
    and it worked fine.

When I use the UsbView program, it tells me that the file /proc/bus/usb/devices doesn't exist! *screams* why isn't that there???
  • XDM

Secondly, my X display manager took a turn for the worse with the upgrade. Instead of having my display manager look like this, it looks like this (minus the colour scheme and hostname).

Why I'm raising a stink about my XDM is because when I log in, it sets me up with KDE. I'm not the biggest fan of KDE. Personally, I'm all about FluxBox and GNOME.

This isn't an anti-Mandriva thread, I'm just getting a little ticked with all these oopsie-daisies that the update has brought.

I think a clean install would have been better. Sometimes upgrades get borked when upgrading older versions of a distro to a much newer version. To fix you login manager issue, reinstall kdm and make sure that it is selected as the login manager using the Mandriva Control Center. I can't be of much help with the printing issue.

I had this crazy problem of printer not working when I asked it to print when I did a 2005LE to 2006 upgrade. I found that the printer was stopped by default on boot and I could start it manually prior to printing if need be. I have since done a clean 2006 install (no upgrade), and it is no longer an issue. Here is how I would start printer when using the upgraded system:
menu>system>configuration>KDE>peripherals>printers
Highlight tp0, on top menu bar, click on "printer" button (between "Add" and "Print Server" button), and you will see in the drop down, "Start/stop printer".

I too experienced some funky stuff with usb on the upgrade system. Not unworkable but I remember it did not work as I expected. Can't be more detailed than that as it was a few weeks back. All works as I would expect on the fresh install of 2006. I have added my ipods to fstab and all is happy. Seems to be that your old system used hotplug scripts for usb mounting, and 2006 uses udev and hal. Seems something gets lost in the translation during upgrade, don't understand the problem, maybe Reddazz or another guru will be able to give some insight to the problem created there.

Bottom line is that the final product of a fresh install and an upgrade is somewhat different and in my opinion the fresh install is much better, giving you the setup as intended by Mandriva.

Thanks again, neighbour. =D

Yeah, it looks as though I'm going to have to do a fkn massive backup of all my data. I'll probably have to piece together a server of some sort.

OK, so, I did a fresh install of Mandriva2006, and it's now even worse off than before.

I'm stuck without an X display

I'm going to re-install it again, see if that clears anything up.

(I'm currently making this post from LYNX running in a tty)

When I booted the computer it did the usual verbose linux startup (show all the services that are being started, etc.) and then it comes time for me to log in, and it throws me out to tty1!!!
I hit Ctrl+Alt+7 to change to tty7 (which is where most linux builds have their X display running) and there's nothing there

Help?

I'm just going to do a re-install, but my hopes aren't too too high.

Thanks for the suggestion reddazz, but just after I made my last post, I formatted, and re-installed Mandriva2006.

And everything is *seemingly* working beautifully

*angry face* I had Mandriva2006 Running for all of one day.

I went to restart it, and it kicked me back out to a tty.

When I typed 'startx,' it gave me the following *long* error:
Code:
(EE) MGA(0): Virtual Size (1280x960) (pitch 1280) exceeds video memory.
(EE) MGA(0): Validate Modes Failed
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
I suppose my question is, is it possible for me to change my X display setting from a terminal?

You need to run xorgconfig as root from the command line and you can make other changes by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

If possible, set up software mirrors with easyurpmi and update your machine. It will fix some problems Mandriva had due to using an experimental version of Xorg.

I've done that =) thanks, perikles.

Mandriva2006's using an unstable developmental version of Xorg?

...can't say I approve of that.

This was a bad move because many people had problems with X. Mandriva quickly provided working updates, but the damage had already been done and those that like to critics had more ammo with which to use against Mandriva.
