Unhappy 10.1 official kernel compile error

i have just installed mandrake (10.1 official - 3 cd's) and have to say its 10 times better than a fedora and even suse.
i have 2 questions.

1. i have configured my sources for urpmi (except contrib -will do it later tonite) however
urpmi firefox
or urpmi --update amarok
does not work.
it says "no package named amarok"

2. I am also trying to recompile my kernel to make my phone (motorola E398) detected as a USB drive). I am not very good at this.
Even if i just 'save and exit' at the 'make xconfig' screen without making any changes, 'make install' or 'make bzImage' gives me the following error
*********************************************************
/usr/src/linux-2.4.27-0.pre2.1mdk/include/net/sock.h: In function `sock_orphan':

I read somewhere that its because of gcc versoin . I have gcc 3.4.1.
Thanks .
Cheers.
