Compile kernel error

I have been using Linux for about 2 weeks now and i'm trying to pick it up as fast as possible.
I'm using Mandrake 9.0
I'm trying to compile my own kernel (i'm blindly following Howto's in a search to learn more about Linux). After i'm done with 'make config' i try and 'make dep' but it gives me the

Make: gcc: Command not found
Make: *** [scripts/mkdep] Error 127

I've done a little research in my search to fix this and started reading about gcc. When i try 'which gcc' it says

Which: no gcc in [.....]

I'm assuming that means i dont have a gcc installed? Will i need to install it? is that right? anyone want to give me some tips on installing a kernel?

much thanks

You need to install the development tools to be able to compile a new kernel.

probably you need "gcc", "make" and "kernel-headers"
