Whats with the linux tutorial place?

I was just gonna write a tutorial on helping to choose a distro. I wrote for around 25 minutes and wanted to preview what I had so far. When I clicked the preview button and wanted a full preview, as it was a option, I lost my writing. Is there a way this can be fixed by maybe making the previewer pop up in a separate window? After 25 minutes of writing I gave up, and LQ might loose good tutorials because of this.

Just a suggestion.

Question Session?

Perhaps your session timed out?

I know that any time I do any substantial writing (especially on a website) I always write it up first in a text editor or word processor and then copy and paste it onto the site. It's quick, takes only a second or two, and I can save my work and know that even if my session on the site times out or something else (such as a browser crash), I still have my writing intact on my computer.

Just a suggestion though...I'm sorry to hear that you lost that much work I know the feeling...

Yep, your session timed out. Even so, you might have got lucky if you pressed the back button (provided you have some cache reserved for websites).

Preparing a tutorial in a word processor (however simple) not only prevents this type of loss, but also probably gives you more control and a better overview of what you are writing.

Sorry you lost your work. Hope you can find the time and energy to give it another try !

Enabling cookies in your browser and your LQ profile will ensure that your session never times out. If the preview button really did lose your article without your session timing out, please submit a bug report so we can look into it.

I'm probably going blind, but I've searched for 'cookies' on the profile and option pages and haven't found anything. I do experience some sort of time-out, as I'm not in the habit of signing out , but my new post count changes everytime I refresh a page after say one hour (whether I close the browser in the meantime or not). That's fine with me, but maybe related to what the thread starter experienced.

D'oh - old answer Make sure you check the "Remember me" box when logging in is now the correct answer.

not meaning to bother you, but again, that's what I do, so everytime I open LQ I'm atomatically logged in... even though I don't log out. Are you sure there isn't some sort of time-out mechanism albeit long?

I have it always remember password and remember me. Would it be easy to make any previews open in a new window?
