Here's my guess:
Because there's already 100 other pages out there, but more specifically, there's www.slashdot.org
I personally think if I'm looking for news, I go to /. but if I'm looking for help on linux, I go here first, then www.google.com/linux and if I don't find it then, I post it up. The point being though, I don't come here for the news, but for the knowledge
This was brought up a long time ago but Jeremy didn't want LQ to be just another news site with a forum along with it. Like MasterC mentioned, there are many many news sites already out there that usually post all the same news as the others. This site focuses more on the forum instead of news. What you see on the main page is news regarding this site.
...and, to be more accurate, there used to be a section at the front that had the /. headlines listed, ect... but no one really used it, so it got retired.
