Change the name of this forum?

Of late, I've been seeing a lot of Linux questions being asked on this forum.

Perhaps the time has come to change the name of this forum to

Website Feedback and Suggestions instead of

Website Questions and Suggestions?

People seem to think that the "Questions" imply that Linux support questions can be asked in this forum.

I don't think changing the name is going to help. Its the top forum, those that are new or don't bother to read just click the first one they see to start posting their questions.

I'm also not sure it would help (some people just seem to pick the first forum they see), but I do think Website Feedback and Suggestions does possibly better represent what the forum is meant for. Does everyone think it's worth changing?

Feedback rather than Questions would better define this forum - and it may make some posters stop before using this forum for technical questions.

WQ&S is now WF&S. I also changed the description a bit. Thanks.

What's done is done and everyone seems happy but 'Feedback and Suggestions' sounds real close to redundant to me and misses that this is also where people get help on the site. (It's not entirely, as 'Great site!' is feedback and not a suggestion, but...) I agree with trickykid that a change probably wouldn't eliminate the problem, but it may help and the key may be 'Questions'. Would 'Website Assistance and Feedback' be enough? That ducks the 'Question' in 'LinuxQuestions' anyway. Might make people recalibrate their heads to see 'WEBSITEAssistance' as one phrase.

Plus, is there a way to rig up a custom message for this forum in the 'New Thread' form? That might help too - 'If you have a question about the Linux operating system rather than the LinuxQuestions.org website, please post in one of the other forums.'

OT - Man. I *love* my UPS. The power went out for a minute and I just kept typing, intending to shut down when I finished, but then it came back. (Last year's Christmas present.)

Drew also suggested we change it to "Website Suggestions & Feedback". Let's get all the suggestions in this thread, decide which one is the best and then I'll make the final change. As for the custom message when posting in this forum, it's on the TODO. I'll add it as soon as we finalize the name. Thanks for the feedback.

For those that don't know, I'm Drew (aka Trickykid).

I thought to myself and after the name change and saying the name over and over a few times outloud and going by the actual definitions of "feedback" and "suggestions", I feel suggestions should go before feedback since most would assume that feedback is given after a suggestion is made..

Okay, yeah, I admit I'm anal retentive and bored at times..

But my vote is to switch, cause to me it just sounds better reading online and saying outloud.

How about LQ Questions and Suggestions?
It's the any Website vs LQ that's confusing people, no?

Is it questions or website? Or what?

Will anyone who's ever posted something in this forum that didn't belong post in this thread and say WHY they did it? No one will take names and chain you in the dungeon - it would just help to know so that the best change can be made.

Though it may be an inscrutable mystery. Why on *earth* would people post problems in 'Success Stories'? But I see that a lot, too.

Unbounded optimism? Well, *after* I get my problem solved, it'll *be* a success story.

Notice that its always the first forum on the top of any specific forum as well? Hence my theory that some don't look but just click on the first link they see at top, then start a new thread not even thinking twice if they are in the most appropiate forum or not.

Same goes for the LFS forum in Distros, so many non-related threads get moved. I suppose some just don't realize there are other subforums in existing forums.

I see it's at the top of the main forum list, and I agree that tends to have people post there - it used to be at the bottom, right - and people would still do it, but not as much?

But I'm not sure what you mean with each specific forum. Like at the top of 'Linux - Software', there's a link to it, too? I'm going blind, I think.

I do see what you mean about LFS, though, and that definitely gets a high proportion of misplaced posts.

My reasoning for requesting the name change was this: I thought that non-native English readers make a genuine mistake when they see the word "Questions" because the site name is

LinuxQuestions

Which means that they associate the word "Questions" in WQ&S as the Questions in LQ. Maybe I spotted it because I am a non-native English speaker.

Thanks for implementing my idea, Jeremy.

My suggestion would be that whatever title you come up with, "LQ" should precede any title.
"Website Suggestions & Feedback", if the people don't read the description to begin with, then they might see this title and start asking about their own web sites. Maybe "LQ Website & Feedback" or whatever the title will be.

Hi:

Well, I'm in late on this discussion, but I'd go with:

Questions and Suggestions About Linuxquestions.org

or

Questions and Suggestions About This Website

where the word This is important: it will help people understand that we are talking about lq.org and not "any website" generically. (I would not use "LQ" or "LQ.org" in the title, though, because newbies might not catch on right away.)

Note that I prefer "About" to "For" because it's unambiguous: I could have a question "for" you that is not "about" you. If people are uncomfortable with "Suggestions About", we could go with "Suggestions and Questions About ..."

An alternative to "Questions and Suggestions" might be "Feedback" because I think "feedback" is understood to cover questions and suggestions. But I'd prefer that the title include the word "Questions" in order to invite them here (where we want them). I think "Feedback" and "Suggestions" are too close to being synonyms.
