Disclaimer: Okay - call me crazy, but I am reading '0 replies email' using outlook2000 SR-1 on a win2k laptop and it insists on opening IE6.
Since the latest scare (bug/security threat) I gallantly turned off Active Scripting and now none of the dropdown lists on LQ show up. As an example if I hover over 'Thread Tools' and right click, I get no dropdown list w/ the 'Subscribe to this Thread' option instead I get dropped to the bottom of the page where a new set of 'boxes' headed 'Thread Tools', 'Search this Thread' and underneath 'Rate Thread' allow me to select my choice.
I have just visited LQ on my Tablet PC running XP SP-1 and IE6 with same result (I also Disabled Active Scripting) ... all my Firefox 1.0.7 and 1.5 machines still work as they used to, i.e. the drop down box appears upon a right click.
So, my question is Vbulletin, php5.1 or something else affected by my turning off active scripting in IE?
Does anybody know how to make Outlook default to Firefox rather than IE without blowing all the other apps that rely exclusively on IE such as help etc.? I did try it on my Tablet and ended up having to reinstall WinXP, but with the general trend these days of Corporates switching to Firefox (and in some cases disabling IE - for security reasons) someone amoungst you'all must have cracked the reliance of PHB's on Outlook and its reliance on IE. Yes/No/Maybe ????
Cheers
Richard
P.S.: This isn't urgent, and I will survive, it is just that I would like to know if there is a way round this lack of functionality if Active Scripting is Disabled. Also, am I right in presuming that the IE active Scripting Bug doesn't affect Firefox or other browsers and/or is it possible to turn off active scripting in Firefox - and why would one want too?

I'll admit to not knowing exactly what "active scripting" is, but the advanced UI elements that aren't working for you are either straight Javascript or AJAX (which to the browser is mostly just Javascript). Hope that info helps.

Upon closer inspection ( support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q154/0/36.asp )

NOTE: In Internet Explorer, the term "Active scripting" or "ActiveX scripting" refers to both Microsoft JScript scripting and Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting Edition. When you complete this procedure, you disable both types of scripts.
I have no idea if "Microsoft JScript" also refers to standard javascript or just the Microsoft embrace-and-extend variety, but if it breaks all JS I think you'll find most sites won't work 100% for you.
Thanks for the rapid response. One lives and learns - I got much the same info from Wikipedia, except that there was no mention of MS JScript being turned off at the same moment in time! I guess all those stories about Windows OS and apps being all so intermingled and inter-reliant have just been proved to be correct. Being a stickler, myself, for believing that my privacy is what I make of it, and that when I pay for a service or software that it should without let or hinderance (whether connected to the internet or not) [rather than activate Office2003 that came with my Tablet PC, I just reinstall the whole shebang, when any of the apps get to their 30 unactivated uses - I paid for the right to use it and have the disks to prove it] I block any and all access (phoning-home) to my machines. Okay, so I don't get automatic updates, and I had to reinstall XP after loading SP2, which broke many of my 'paid for' windows only apps - such as Dragon Naturally Speaking which I have been unable to get working under wine - but, touch wood, my three firewalls and Symantec have avoided any virii/trojans/rootkits and spam over the past 4 years.
Sorry for the rant, especially since I would never have believed that you would put LQ on a system that reqired ActiveX!
I just changed my default browser to FireFox 1.5.0.1 and lo and behold my Outlook links to LQ emails now open a new tab in my Firefox window. Hopefully nothing will break. I will post back if it does.
