Cool Thought I'd introduce myself. I own CowboyTech Computers (since 1984).

I've worked on computers since 1968, starting with SAGE centers in the Air Force. Let it slip aside for a while, until I went home in 1970, and began taking on odd computer jobs until about 1982 when I purchased my first home PC. Fixed mine in 1984, and my neighbor found out. Fixed his, then he sent me about a hundred other people. Low and behold, I'm in business.

Been doing this ever since. Got into Linux in about 1989, but didn't think much of it at first. Have followed different distros of Linux and finally settled on Ubuntu. Currently running 9.10 on an AMD dual core, with Asus board, Nvidia video w/1 gig ram, and 4 gig on board. Two 350 gig Hard Drives (one with Windows 7 - one with Ubuntu).

Also have two other computers. One with Vista Ultimate and XP - dual booting. Finally, an Intel Dual core (core duo - whatever) with 8 gig RAM, onboard video, running Snow Leopard.

Guess what I enjoy doing the most?

Welcome to LQ.

Curious, I thought Linus created the Linux kernel in 1991. You thinking of GNU Hurd maybe?

Could very well be. I'm getting too old to remember all the details. I may even have my birth date wrong...? What I do know is that what I tried was all command-line based and really didn't do much for me. A guy I met on a bulletin board (remember those?) turned me on to it thinking I'd be in love with it right away - didn't happen.

I ultimately started using Red Hat in about 2000 or so (again, that's just an aged guess), and finally decided I liked Debian based distros better (somewhere around 2 years ago). No real reason except that I really like the way Ubuntu, Dream Linux, and Mint feel, look, and work. They seem less complicated for my brain these days. Currently living on Ubuntu 9.10 - which is what I'm using as I write this... I think.

Sorry about the foopah on the date. I'll try to watch that from now on... or just keep my mouth shut about details. Kind of embarrassing to realize I messed up on something as simple as a date approximation. Must be a complex or something.

And I write poetry. Does that have anything to do with Linux? Not sure anymore.

NP about the date, I sometimes get fuzzy myself.

Ah, BBS, all text and no graphics, those were the days. I remember dialing into my town's BBS with a blazing fast 300 baud modem. I thought I was the cat's meow.

I remember fairly well, but I really don't miss the complications I ran in to. This guy turned me on to Norton Commander, and a few other goodies too. Once I configured commander with the system menu options, I figured computers had gone about as far as they could! I have an updated version of Commander running on Ubuntu right now, but I can't remember who put it out. Not as useful as it used to be, but sure brings back the memories.

Well, enough rehashing the past. When I get today's work finished, I may check out other posts. Nice talking to you - writing to you - whatever.
