Finally made an account
Hey everyone, I've been digging through this forum for years to find solutions to various problems. In fact, the very first linux problem I ever had was ubuntu hardy heron on an old dell laptop, and I found the answer to my wireless issues here.
Since then I've used
*several ubuntu derivatives -- super friendly community, great place to start, but I wanted to learn more about what was going on under the hood.
*Arch for a year or two -- elitist user base, but I learned a massive amount really quickly. Eventually I got tired of accidentally blowing my system up every few weeks.
Now I'm on straight Debian, which has some pro's and con's of it's own. It's nice to have access to the basic system without all of ubuntu's configuration scripts and such in the way, but it's not what you could call "bleeding edge"... at all. It's nice and stable in contrast to Arch, but sheesh, I can't even compile half of the applications I want from source because my libraries are so far behind their development releases.
I don't want to kick off a distro war, but does anyone have any good recommendations for a happy medium between up to date, stable, and lightweight (few services/application installed by default, few config scripts/wrappers)?
Anyways, it was about time I made an account here since I've gotten so much help from the site in the past.
