wireless pci card problem

Hi all,

After some trouble getting an SMC28002W wireless pci card to work, I apparently got success. Using ndiswrapper and the windows xp drivers I can get it working in Fedora Core 3. But there's something wrong (yet). I have this linux box connected also via LAN, so I have two IP's for the machine. Lets say IP1 via LAN and IP2 via WLAN (in the same subnet and with the same configuration). When I ping IP2 from another computer I got success and everything works, but when I disconnect the LAN cable I lost all the connections to the computer and can't ping IP2. So it is like the WLAN card only works with the LAN card connected.

Anyone has any idea of what could be wrong ?

Thanks and best regards,

FFB

It's incorrect to have the wireless card on the same subnet as the LAN. All network cards in a computer should be on different subnets. That's why the wireless card stops working - I think you'll find if you change the wireless card onto a different subnet it will no longer work, and that it has never worked. Because they were on the same subnet, Linux was sending packets destined for the wireless card's IP address across the LAn cable and then routing them internally to the wireless IP.

Well, once indeed I tried ifdown to the lan card and I still get no connection to the wlan...
But it's a bit strange that the WLAN receive and send packets (iwconfig/ifconfig result)...why wouldn't the wlan card work ?

Are the WLAN card drivers working properly? Can you see the correct setup of the wireless lan in iwconfig? Have you got the network keys entered correctly if you're using WEP?

Yes. I inclusive tried dhcp and it gets an ip from the router.
I'm using wep and no problem with the keys.
