seeking help with realtek8180 (linksys) under kernel 2.4.33

Hi there. I feel i'm most of the way there - i'm hoping someone can help me the rest of the way.

It seems i'm stuck on getting an IP address for my wlan0 interface - although i doubt it's the fault of the dhcp server (a belkin router). it serves the several other computers (all osx machines) consistantly and without fail.

Actually I've tried manually setting the IP address, gw, etc for the interface, but I can't ping out. I was a sysadmin in a past life - so i'm fairly sure there wasn't a problem choosing those manual settings.

the problem child is running slackware 11 - stock 2.4.33 kernel. the card is a linksys WPC11v4. i've compiled and manually installed the realtek8180 modules form sourceforge.

I should also mention the airports are using 128WEP.

Can anyone give me a pointer of where I should be looking next? Or something I missed?

Thanks Much!

maybe the problem is at authentication?

I just tried intentionally setting an incorrect key with
iwconfig wlan0 key "s:wrongpassword" - and i haven't seen anything
different. the card still seems to be accociating? with the nearest airport base station. iwconfig wlan0 still reports:

In case anyone else is following this thread, i had much better luck with ndiswrapper and the winxp driver for the card. everything seems to work, though inconsistantly, except encryption right now, which i'm going to take to another thread.
