Problem to connect to a wlan access point

Hello,

I got a little problem concerning my wlan configuration. i have to admit that i am quite a beginner with networking under linux ( the wired connection just worked after installation...). My wlan card (broadcom 4318) seems to work, iwlist eth1 scan gives

eth1 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: 00:1A:4F:16:45:99
ESSID:"WLAN-001A4F164599"
Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg
Mode:Master
Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
Encryption keyn
Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s
11 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 22 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s
36 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s
Quality=89/100 Signal level=-47 dBm Noise level=-73 dBm
IE: WPA Version 1
Group Cipher : TKIP
Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP
Authentication Suites (1) : PSK
Extra: Last beacon: 28ms ago

I assume this is our local access point (or does this actually just describe the configuration I typed in somewhere?). I use gnome and therefore the integrated network configuration tool. i inserted the name of the network and the passphrase, when trying to activate the wlan connection, it takes some time, then displays connection activated ( i dont know wether this means it could establish a connection or whatever...) but i am unable to browse the net via firefox. actually, i have no idea how to figure out, wether the connection got established and how to tell firefox and other programs not to use eth0, the wired, but eth1 , the wireless lan, so my first question would be how to check the establishment of that connection. the second one is due to the passphrase: within the config tool, you can choose in between hex or ascii format for the key. well, the key i got consists of decimal digits only ( all in all 16 digits), so i dont know wether the key is hex or ascii or decimal. in the third possibility, i dont know how to enter or to convert it ( treat the entire key as ONE number or split it up into for example four numbers and convert each separately or how to?).
thanks & greetings
Michael

I think you were able to authenticate with the router. I'm guessing that you need to configure your computer to use DHCP. See if you can ping your routers IP address. You probably just don't have your ISP's name server (DNS) IP address in /etc/resolve.conf.

Also look at the output of "/sbin/route". Is the IP of your router used as the default gateway. Both of these should be configured by your DHCP client.
