problem installing atk for ethereal

I started with installing ethreal. The manual indicated the requirements of the glib and atk packets. Now I am having problem with installing atk. I am not expert on linux and had previously posted the question in newbie, but got no response. I would be grateful if anybody could just point me in the right direction.

Story so far,
I had unziped (prob I should say untared) the downloaded files in
/usr/src/glib-2.2.3/
I had then installed glib from there.

--------------------------------
Libraries have been installed in:
/usr/local/lib

If you ever happen to want to link against installed libraries
in a given directory, LIBDIR, you must either use libtool, and
specify the full pathname of the library, or use the `-LLIBDIR'
flag during linking and do at least one of the following:
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_LIBRARY_PATH' environment variable
during execution
- add LIBDIR to the `LD_RUN_PATH' environment variable
during linking
- use the `-Wl,--rpath -Wl,LIBDIR' linker flag
- have your system administrator add LIBDIR to `/etc/ld.so.conf'

See any operating system documentation about shared libraries for
more information, such as the ld(1) and ld.so(8) manual pages.
----------------------

/usr/local/lib previously added in ld.so.conf
did "ldconfig" again

"./configure" for atk
---------------------
*** 'pkg-config --modversion glib-2.0' returned 2.2.3, but GLIB (2.2.1)
*** was found! If pkg-config was correct, then it is best
*** to remove the old version of GLib. You may also be able to fix the
error
*** by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH enviroment variable, or by editing
*** /etc/ld.so.conf. Make sure you have run ldconfig if that is
*** required on your system.
*** If pkg-config was wrong, set the environment variable
PKG_CONFIG_PATH
*** to point to the correct configuration files
no configure: error:
*** GLIB 2.0.0 or better is required. The latest version of
*** GLIB is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/.
--------------------------

In our case the pkg-config is correct. How do I remove the old glib and
get the new one linked to all the programs ?

Please help. Thanks in advance.

to get list of glib files ( asssuming installed from an rpm )
rpm -ql glib

to remove
rpm -e glib

there are also remove options to force and ignore dependencies.

I believe that directories other than /lib and /usr/lib that are searched by ld are listed in /etc/ld.so.conf (at least in my linux 2.6)

There should be flags in configure script for the glib tar source to specify where the libs are installed if you want to do that.

thanx beyer42

I looked in the /usr/lib/ and I found both old and new libglib
I renamed the old one, did ldconfig, and it worked fine after that.
