That implies many answers there.
First option (quoting myself):

For other browsers to work specify their proxy/gateway conf into them

Easy, just add the proxy configuration (IP and port of the proxy on your network) to your browser. In firefox (I'm translating menus from spanish lang) add it to edit > preferences > advanced > network > configuration.
Second option, post the output of several commands to understand your network:
type, as root, "route" in a terminal and paste here the output, "ifconfig", The same for "ifconfig -a" (if it gives different output from the last), "cat /etc/network/interfaces", and if you have any show what's your actual config in your browsers regarding proxy IP's and ports.
It will be great if you look into your system and user profile to see if there is a line like this:
Code:
HTTP_PROXY=http://192.168.1.1:8080
Try typing "cat $HOME/profile | grep HTTP_PROXY" and "cat /etc/profile | grep HTTP_PROXY" into a terminal and posting the ouput too.
So we'll have enough info to give you some useful answer, I think.
