Network Manager Applet Problem

I have Sabayon linux installed on an IBM thinkpad T42 with an atheros 5212 wireless card. The wireless works fine with the madwifi drivers installed by default, using iwconfig and dhclient to connect. Sabayon comes with the network manager applet started by default, which is a great tool, but it doesnt seem to work with my wireless for some reason. I can use it to connect via the e1000 wired NIC, and even a pcmcia adapter, just not the mini-pci atheros card.
Could this problem be related to the way atheros cards are supported, with the athX interface instead of ethX? Is this an isolated problem, or is it a problem with atheros cards and network manager?

I use the network manager applet on my Atheros based PCMCIA card with Ubuntu without problems, and it uses the ath0 interface.

I just installed Ubunutu and network manager, though not installed by default, works perfectly once installed. The problem was the version. Sabayon was using 0.6.4 and ubuntu uses 0.6.3
So if anyone has a similar problem, downgrade network manager
