I've got a powerbook g3 wallstreet with a linksys wpc11 version 3.0 pcmcia wlan adapter. I have tried previous instructions to get the wlan files and install them. However I get an error on the make all step of the compile process. I get an entered directory then it says leaving directory error 2
twice it says this two different directories.
I'm lost and would appreciate any info someone could give me
Im running yellowdog linux 2.3 on a powerbook g3 wallstreet 233mhz
160 megs ram
2 gig hd
The linux-wlan modules won't compile for ppc all the time, its a kludge, but no fear, the orinoco_cs modules are there! All you have to do is trick cardmgr into using them... If you copy:
(I think, been a while since I played with yellowdog), then you should hear the two happy beeps and be able to use the command:
iwconfig
to configure the card. If you get stuck post back, or if you get anxious, do a search here by WPC11 and it should work much the same as the PC laptops. The kernel code on the driver level should be fine... heck the whole shebang should work, but you gotta realize you are in the minority running a PC pcmcia card on G3 under linux, a little bitty minorty.
well i downloaded that file
and followed your instructs.
unfortunately nothing has worked yet
Im a newbie and am hoping you bear with me
I copied that file to the /etc/pcmcia directory
then i ran the command you typed above
nothing happened
did I do something wrong?
am i supposed to cut and past something from that lqhacks.conf into another file
plz help
thx for your help thus far

Linux --One small step for mankind, One giant leap for me!
Okay, its probably just that the hack file doesn't properly represtn your card. Lets get the identification straight off of the card and then hack in an entry for it into /etc/pcmcia/config or lqhacks.conf so that it'll match the card up with the orinoco_cs modules.
/sbin/cardctl ident
Will get us the info off of the card. Compare the manfid line with the one in lqhacks and see if the numbers match, if not, change 'em, and post it here as that's an odd little beasty... also, lets make certain that Yellow dog didn't do anything odd and you actually have the right module compiled:
locate orinoco_cs.o
If it complains about "blah blah blah" databse too small, run:
updatedb
That'll create a locate database that'll get periodically updated so as to make searching for files simpler.
Also, what kernel is this running on?
uname -r
I assumed good and new, hopefully yellowdog hasn't tried to stay in the kernel dark ages.
well first off i get no product info available when i do the cardctl ident command
so my pcmcia seems to not be working
wtf
it's kernel 2.4
yellowdog linux
Yeah, that response comes with nothing is listening to the socket... which is a pain. The Powerbook's pcmcia bridge is supported, actually its the same PC component that is in a ton of 'Shibas and Stinkpads and Dells from around the same era. What happens with a:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
If it hacks errors, what does /var/log/syslog say? Although that may be the wrong log... check through /var/log, every distro seems to monkey with which logfile they dump info to...
i typed it and nothing happens
then when i try to see whats on the sockets with cardctl ident
i get the same message that no product info is available
arghhhhh!!!
Most important is: what is in the log? Is YellowDog under the illusion that pcmcia is running or did it hack and die and not tell you anything useful on the command-line?
when my system boots pcmcia loads as a module
or so it says
it loads ok according to the bootup sequence
however when i try the command you told me to do it just indexes down a line with no error code and leaves me hanging
i looked for a log but couldn't find one
HELP!!!!!!
ok MAN, i GOT the card to show up with cardctl ident
and also checked the lqhack manfid against the one cardctl iden gave me
and they match
however, now im not gettin the card to run i dont know what to do next
Is the machine loading the module orinoco_cs? If so, check the command "dmesg" and see what ethernet device the card got assigned, knowing Mac, probably eth1 as eth0 is going to be the onboard ethernet.
ifconfig eth1 up
iwconfig eth1 essid nameofnetwork (the network name)
iwconfig eth1 enc 21321321321 (the WEP key, if you have one)
dhcpcd eth1
