ipw2200 - firmware issue

pw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
ipw2200: Unable to load ucode: -22
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -22
ipw2200: failed to register network device
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:03:03.0 disabled
ipw2200: probe of 0000:03:03.0 failed with error -5

I keep getting that message. I have downloaded the firmware(ipw2200-fw-3.0) and placed it in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware . I'm using Debian Lenny. It's frustrating because sometimes lspci does not even show my wireless card. I can't understand why this is so hard to get working - I had wireless working for over a year but can't figure out what I did wrong to mess it up and what is going on here. Any suggestions

Is there a /usr/lib/firmware directory (ie. not under hotplug)? It may be a Debian thing, but my ipw2200 driver (in SUSE 10.1) looks for the firmware in /usr/lib/firmware as far as I can remember (but then my built-in wireless device isn't hotplugged either, which may explain it!)

HTH,

Or was it /lib/firmware?
See http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/.../msg00701.html

well i have put it in both of those places, just in case, and no difference. now I'm even more confused though. My wireless network card doesn't even show up when I do lscpi. How is that possible? That doesn't even have anything to do with drivers does it?
