how to put a network card into monitor mode?

i lost the key to my network, but windows stores it, so I can still connect, but now I have a new computer, and I don't know what the key is. I read that you could use aircrack to crack the key, but it says i need to put it into monitor mode. I tried to the command: iwconfig ath0 mode monitor , but got the following error message:

brian-linux:~ # iwconfig ath0 mode monitor
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device ath0 ; Invalid argument.
brian-linux:~ #

i use a netgear wg311t net card with the madwifi driver

did i do something wrong?

thanks,
rabbit2345

If I'm not mistaken, your router should have the network key stored in it. You could connect to your router and go to the security settings, and encryption i think. You should be able to retrieve the network key from there.

It would probably be easier to find a utility for Windows to extract the keys from the Registry.

You could possibly crack a WEP network given enough time and wireless traffic ... but if it is WPA I would not bother.
