Unhappy Setting Orinoco wireless card to monitor mode

I am running airsnort 0.2.2.a on linux redhat 8.0. The wireless network card is a Orinoco 802.11b "Gold" wireless network card. I have installed the updates for the Orinoco_cs-0.11b wireless card from the '' web site. When I start airsnort, I receive error messages that state "Could not set monitor mode". I attempted to perform it manually using "iwpriv eth0 monitor 1", however the reply is "eth0 no private ioctls". Any suggestions would be helpful.
