[SuSE 9.2] wlan card works but cannot see pages etc.


Hoi all,

After several days of struggeling with different distro's I finally chose to just install SuSE 9.2 for it's excellent support with the Intel 2200BG Wireless ethernet card.

I own a notebook which is similar to the Acer Travelmate 900 series with a build in Intel 2200bg card. After installing the distro, running updates and fetching / installing the ipw-firmware (from a random SuSE server) my card immediately worked. Not 'out of the box' like numerous people say on the internet but fast enough comparing the sourceforge drivers and installation methods.

Well, after all that I configurated the wlan card with the appropriated settings:
- ESSID
- MODE
- WEP
- Etc.

After rebooting the notebook SuSE correctly passed eth0 (onboard lan) without booting it and continued to enable / boot eth1 (intel 2200bg). After a few seconds a ip address appeared with behind it a netmask (192.168.1.4 / 255.255.255.0).
So... I'm done right? But no. After logging in as a normal user and launching mozilla and typing a random website (such as google.com / tweakers.net) the sites wouldn't appear and a message appeared 'can't find the hostname' But when I type in the address of my wireless router (192.1681.1) the dialog screen appears and I can access the router.

So basically, there is a connection and the card works. But something I can't find is blocking me from accessing the internet. So far I already checked some settings of the wlan card and booted with the firewall turned. Both had no effect.

Welcome to LQ.

It sounds like one of two things, you either don't have a default route out of your network or you don't have any dns servers configured.

Can you post the output from:
route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf

eth0 = onboard 10/100 ethernet card.
eth1 = build in Intel 2200bg wireless lan card (which it's about).

Hi everybody.

I'm glad to announce that the problem has been solved. Again I logged into the router and reviewed all settings. Then lightning must have strucked me because I figured out that I had to fill 'a name server' (192.168.1.1) and fill in a gateway (also 192.168.1.1). After doing this and rebooting the notebook it worked. I started Mozilla and my homepage immediately appeared.

Thanks to david_ross for pushing me into the right direction.
