Red Hat EL5.2 - Adding CPU's via VMWARE - Urgent

Hi

i have tried adding CPU's to one of our servers via vsphere not via HOTplug. I power down server and vm add the CPU and power on - the server doesn't bootup though.

uname - r = 2.6.18-92.el5PAE

I have read something about requiring an SMP kernel? Is this the case? how can I switch without re=installing red hat?

Just some very mean remarks:
Redhat is usable only with a paid support contract
VMWare is also a company with paid support contracts.
Here we are a band of geeks offering support for free.
So nothing is urgent for us here!

Please do not post "this is not urgent for us" type of messages without addressing the topic.

Best look at logs like clients dmesg (if any), VMware server and guest logs wrt clues and causes.

It's not like 2.4 where you hade 2.4 and 2.4-smp. I thought all RHEL-5 series kernels were UP and SMP-enabled?
