zypper forces new packages when I uninstall others
I've been trying to uninstall a bunch of packages, such as kde and the related, on an OpenSuSE 13.2 linux distribution using zypper. The problem is that when I try to do that, it says that it's going to install another 5 new packages:
Code:
The following 5 NEW packages are going to be installed:
NetworkManager-gnome NetworkManager-openvpn-gnome NetworkManager-pptp-gnome NetworkManager-vpnc-gnome libnm-gtk0
I'm really annoyed about this, because I simply want to get rid of the graphical environment and its applications altogether. Any ideas how to get rid of this?
just like CentOS ( yum-priorities plugin)
there are priorities in the yast GUI ( 0 to 200 with 99 as default)
also there is a "allow vender change"
and a auto install development and mixed arch ( 32bit & 64 bit)
as for things like "NetworkManager-gnome"
if you uninstall the "KDE desktop" you are also uninstalling the Network Manager for KDE
and NetworkManager is REQUIRED so one needs to be installed
I don't agree. NetworkManager is NOT required. And if that were true, what about the other packages? It doesn't make too much sense, really.
As I was saying, I'm just trying to get rid of the GUI and anything related to it. I'm really not looking forwarding to learning yast, not just now. There would be too many distros to learn, and I'm sticking to CentOS for now.
This is simply a suse installation that I'm stuck with and I simply need to get rid of all those packages and I'd like zypper to simply ignore the priorities and simply uninstall what I'm telling it to uninstall, without those silly compulsory new installations. I know it's preposterous to ask this on this forum without first reading at least 10,000 pages of manuals and tutorials, but can this be done in a simple way, without having to learn everything there is to learn about yast?
SUSE is VERY GUI centric
yast is used
even in the terminal only server there is a ncurs version
most things on suse are easier in the gui than the terminal
Also the os is known to be bloated ( everything including "the kitchen sink" is tossed in )
hence the rpm's pull in A LOT of other rpm's
if you do not want a desktop installed
then reinstall using the server set up from the install dvd
( or uninstall the desktop pattern )
although suse is a rpm based distro it is VERY different than rhel/cent
suse is SO different that there are SUSE only guides
most of the time you really can not use the redhat guides for suse
the OS is too different and they do things differently
Ok, that's a fair enough answer. The problem is that I can't afford to change the operating system, not just yet, but I'll do it some time in the future. I just wanted to make it as secure as possible now, but I'm still not knowledgeable enough, so I don't have the necessary confidence to transfer all the data on CentOS. I'll learn more and I'll see
