yum issue

I have a 64 bit dell machine. I install fedora core 4 x86_64 and then go and use yum upgrade and in the conf i have kernel* excluded. It seems to have over 1000 software updates which it downloads fine. I does the test okay and starts installing. It seems after it gets over 100 updates completed it freezes. It has done this several times and its basically where i have to scrub the box every time and re-install.

Anyone had this issue or have an idea why its doing this. My work around now is to do individual updates. I am gonna put up a 32 bit box and see if i can reproduce this.

Why not try a different approach?

Update the kernel first, reboot to the newer kernel and then do a partial or full update.
Code:
# yum update kernel
# reboot
# yum update
--OR--
# yum groupupdate “Web Server”
You can use “# yum grouplist” to see what groups are available.

**********

Also, it sounds like you are doing an “install everything”. That shouldn’t be a problem, but if you continue to run into yum trouble, then try installing “desktop” and see if you still have trouble.

You can always go back and add package groups using the yum groupinstall option:

For example:
Code:
# yum grouplist
# yum groupinfo “Web Server”
# yum groupinstall “Web Server”
