Angry Ymessenger segmentation fault....why?

Hi all,

I'm running Mandrake 10 Official. Tonight I tried installing ymessenger 9 for Red Hat and got the following:

[root@localhost bin]# ./ymessenger
Error: Unable to access /root/.ymessenger directory or write to it.
Creating Yahoo! Messenger directory: /root/.ymessenger.
Creating directory /root/.kde/share/applnk
Creating directory /root/.kde/share/applnk/Yahoo!
Segmentation fault

Why the segmentation fault and how do I uninstall ymessenger and try it again?

Thanks.

Mike

Hey Soujmr,

You just posted a reponse to my question, so I felt it fair to repond to yours

First of all, to uninstall the yahoo messenger that's in there, either go to the Mandrake package removal utility (type as roon rpmdrake-remove), or type in "urpme ymessenger' as root.

To install yahoo's official yahoo messenger as root you type in "rpm -i rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm' or "rpm -ivh rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm" to make it go without asking you any questions. If will prompt you that the package has an invalid signature if you just do -i but continue anyways.

Next, don't run the program it's self as root, run it as a normal user. Just type in "ymessenger" on the command prompt. It looks like the problem occured when trying to create the yahoo preferences in root's home folder. Run it as yourself and it will create it in YOUR home folder.

Yahoo messenger will run on Mandrake 10.0 without a problem, I've already tried it. I just prefer to use gaim. It's much better. I'm running the same distribution that you are so these steps should work. Good luck buddy.

Hi yaega,

I did as you suggested. I first uninstalled the package and then did the following:

[root@localhost sources]# urpme ymessenger

removing ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386
[root@localhost sources]# rpm -i rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm
[root@localhost sources]# exit
exit
[photoman@localhost sources]$ ymessenger
Creating file /home/photoman/Desktop/ymessenger.kdelnk
Creating file /home/photoman/.kde/share/applnk/Yahoo!/ymessenger.kdelnk
Segmentation fault

I also tried it with rpm -ivh and still no joy. What a pain in the keester. Not sure where to go from here.

I installed ymessenger 8 and it works fine. YM9 must have issues with my Mandrake 10 load. I'm just going to run with version 8 for now.

One thing though...I have to keep my terminal window open after invoking the program or it closes out YM and I have to reopen the terminal window and retype >ymessenger for it to run. What gives?

I used to have a problem like that a few times ago. But, after many times trying in my Slackware 9.1 & Mandrake 10 boxes, i think i know that the problem. It might in the preferences file in .ymessenger folder.

Just remove your preferences and preferences.old files [as a user of course],
rm -f ~/.ymessenger/preferences*

then, you can call ymessenger from the terminal, it will bring you a few setup question. After finish answering it. It will bring you the messenger box. Don't go inside for the first time. Just close the log-in question and go to Login -> Preferences, and setting them up all thing that you find (in my box, it is because the firewall setting....).

After that, you can apply and save them. then try closing your messenger and open it again. I hope it will work. Good luck...

Hey, your answer was put in another post. Just uncheck the options to put shortcuts on the desktop when you install it. I didn't even think about the fact that I always have those turned off because I hate them.

Uninstal, then reinstall without checking the options to put anything in on the desktop or in the menu's. I guess the problem lies in the fact your program is for redhat and not for mandrake
