Arrow Xscreensaver- making the sonar screensaver ping

Hello-

On xscreensaver, there is a screensaver called sonar. You can make it ping a subnet,
but you have to be root to do it, since I get that error message whenever the screensaver
runs, saying -

"This program must be run as root for "ping mode" to work."

This is what the screensaver command looks like on xscreensaver-demo-

sonar -root -ping subnet/29

So, does any body kno how to get this working? The version of
xscreensaver is 4.16.

According to the sonar manpage, you can either set the ping mode to ping a simulated subnet:
Code:
sonar -root -ping simulation
or risk possible security vunrabilities and make sonar setuid:
Code:
chown root.root sonar
chmod a+s sonar
(the last pair of commands should be run from the same directory as the sonar executable; you can find this with the sonar command).

chmod a+s sonar

thank you for this very helpful thread.
If you have a 64 bit version of linux you need chmod +s sonar
and not chmod a+s sonar. for the 32 bit versions of linux chmod a+S is ok.
at least that is what worked for me.
