xorg 6.8.1 (dri?) problem

Now, hm, where to begin?

my setup is a multihead setup with two monitors, one driven by an on-board intel i810 and one driven by a pci ati sapphire radeon 7000.

when i run startx from my home dir the server loads and everything works fine, i can watch movies, play elastomania with wine, run glxgears.. the problem comes when i try to switch back to a virtual terminal, then the whole system freezes, music stops playing - the whole box dies. i have no idea what is causing this. so im asking you. my config can be found here: http://apc.homelinux.org/xorg.conf.radeon.og.i810
and the full log here: http://apc.homelinux.org/Xorg.0.log.1strun

I have also tried to kill X by pressing ctrl+alt+backspace, that gets me back to the virtual terminal, but, when i try to run X again it only comes up on the monitor which is driven by the i810 card. the second (radeon) one, is just dead. i have no idea what do try or do here either. here is what i see on the tty: http://apc.homelinux.org/Xorg.output.2ndrun
and the full log: http://apc.homelinux.org/Xorg.0.log.2ndrun

i should mention that had an old ati mach64 instead of the new radeon card and that it worked flawlessly, only problem was it couldnt show more than 16 million collors (or whatever) and it ran at 1024x768. and also, when i run X on the i810 only i can switch between ttys, kill X and run it again as many times as i want.

oh, and i am not sure if its dri because i see the exact same thing when i have no dri support in the kernel.

any suggestions are welcome, as i am completely stuck.

I had a similar problem with my old SiliconMotion SM910 :
It used to freeze totally with Xfree 4
It freezed with Xfree 3 when I went back to the term & back again to the X server.

What made it work was to toggle the use of crt display (3 modes : on - lcd only - simul) one way round (so it was back to initial position, but the card had sort-of re-initialized itself) after each switch from/to a X server.

Try this, if you have a CRT/LCD key on your laptop.
