hi there

some desktops are very heavy that is they take a lot of resources

burt gnome has not been a problem as compared to KDE,maybe u have many taskbar preloaded or applets preloaded

see what is consuming the most resources in ur both desktops by
"top"

hi there

i do not think XFREE86 is a problem, since it is also being used in KDE

also analyse the output of "top" for some time since initially all packags will take a good amount of resources

and what about "top" in KDE

"top" in kde nothing happen, xmms start so quickly.
in gnome, xmms start all things will frozen, so the "top" cann't change at that time, when xmms have started,"top" show XFree86 use CPU 99%~
that is said during the xmms started,"top" cann't show anything
