When I play a DVD with Xine, I cannot hear the speech of the actors well enough to understand them when there is music or other background noise.

I do have Mythtv running and recordings and avi's seem to sound fine, its just DVD's with Xine that are hard to understand.

I did change xine (using the gui) to 2.0 speakers thinking that might help but it doesnt seem to have made a difference. Thought maybe I couldnt hear people because Xine was sending voices to the center, and I dont have a center speaker.

Im not sure I have audio set up properly to be honest. If I Mute Xine, nothing happens, it doesnt mute. Changing the volume doesnt do anything either.

Any help appreciated, even if its just a nudge in the right direction.

I think you're on the right track... with the DVD sound mixer...

Sounds like you have your front channels muted or something..

check out your sound mixer...
I'm assuming.. you have alsa..

go to console as root

alsamixer .... and check to see if you mains are (M) muted or just turned really low...
